The King County Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault/CSE department provides services to adult survivors of gender-based violence. The Sexual Assault Community Advocate will provide trauma-informed advocacy, assist survivors in safety planning and supportive services, i.e. life skills, community outreach, employment and housing. The Advocate will apply a trauma-informed care and strengths-based approach as well as culturally-relevant services when working with survivors. This position will support communities furthest away from opportunities, specifically African American women. 

This position has a social justice component that requires critical thinking through the lens of racism and intersections with poverty. Knowing the core principals of anti-racism and grounding those principles in everyday work are required job skills and core values. In accordance with COVID-19 safety practices, YWCA has a COVID-19 Vaccination Policy, and all new hires need to be fully vaccinated prior to their first day of employment.  YWCA considers a new hire “fully vaccinated” when at least two weeks have passed after the date the employee received: 

  • A second dose in a two-dose vaccine series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines; or   

  • A single-dose vaccine, such as the Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) vaccine. 

  • Support survivors immediate needs (e.g. food, personal hygiene products, bus tickets, and clothing) or items which enhances the client’s safety, stability and self-sufficiency
  • Provide trauma-informed, survivor-centered support for victims of sexual assault
  • Respond to referrals in a timely manner
  • Maintain a positive, collaborative relationship with team for on-going communication and co-advocacy
  • Stay current with knowledge of all community resources relevant to meet survivor needs 
  • Provide culturally-relevant advocacy and survivor assistance, safety, identify resources and process referrals
  • Schedule and manage your own appointments for intakes and follow-up
  • Co-facilitate virtual support groups
  • Provide agency, community and street outreach
  • Attend regular scheduled bi-weekly GBVSS staff meetings
  • Work in partnership with  King County Sexual Assault Services, Adult Survivor and King County Collaborative
  • Maintain accurate survivor files, conduct timely data collection and contract reporting monthly and quarterly
  • Demonstrate commitment to respecting individual difference in serving diverse populations
  • Implement all work by incorporating the YWCA’s Social Justice Initiative by understanding how racism, sexism, classism and other oppressions intersect and are embedded in all institutions and systems
  • Provide co-advocacy and demonstrate the ability to work in a collaboration, multi-partners to increase options for survivors to improve the quality of life
  • Attend YWCA required safety trainings and meetings; follow all safety and health guidelines, standards, practices, policies and procedures; and actively participate in the agency’s Emergency Preparedness, SJAT, COVID Protocols and other activities as required
  • Coordinate community trainings with community groups, agencies and marginalized populations in Seattle and South King County
  • Develop ongoing referral relationships internally and with external health providers, law enforcement, and other social service providers
  • Interfaces with community advocates to guide survivors through the criminal justice system
  • Maintain continued education training on sexual assault advocacy-based training as certified by WCSAP
  • Maintain GBVSS office cleanliness to adhere to CDC COVID-19 safety standards
  • Actively engages in agency-wide Race and Social Justice Initiative (RSJI), and strives for racially equitable outcomes; takes responsibility for creating and maintaining a safe and welcoming community by making room for people of color, trans and gender-non-conforming folks, and other populations who routinely encounter systemic oppressions
  • Adhere to all Volunteer Services protocol relative to volunteer usage, recognition and monitoring

Qualifications & Core Competencies:
  • One year of experience working with survivors of the sex trade, domestic violence, sexual assault and other vulnerable populations
  • A degree in human services or related field and at least one year of direct social service experience; or translatable lived-experience skills considered in lieu of degree
  • Completion of a minimum 20 hours of initial basic training that covers: advocacy based counseling, history of domestic violence, confidentiality and ethics, client safety planning, crisis intervention, providing services and advocacy to individuals from diverse communities, and policies and procedures for GBVSS service
  • Advocate working with survivors of commercial sexual exploitation are also required to attend an additional 24 hours of training on human trafficking and/or commercial sexual exploitation
  • Experience working with population that are furthest from opportunities, specifically women of color
  • Must have strong knowledge and experience in maintaining confidentiality
  • Able to respond to emergency crisis calls with professional, ethical boundaries
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced, high call volume and often intense work
  • Strong problem-solving, solution implementation, emotion regulation, and conflict resolution abilities and engage in radical self-care
  • Strong orientation towards advocacy, with ability to navigate multiple systems (i.e. human services, health, law enforcement, etc.)
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and SMS text messaging
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Confidence in handling complicated situations
  • Able and willing to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Must maintain 30 hours of SA core training, which can be found on WSCAP.org
  • Valid WA driver’s license and ability to travel independently for off-site meetings and to engage in mobile advocacy
  • Experience working with victims of violence, particularly sexual assault, domestic violence, or CSE, whether in a legal or non-legal capacity
  • Familiar with how the interplay of cultural issues (e.g., racism, gender) may influence how some women of color (esp. African Americans) are affected by and respond to situations of sexual violence
  • Experience working with communities of color and people from different cultures than your own 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills of basic computer competencies such as emailing, calendaring, entry-level data entry and familiarity with Microsoft Office products

  • All positions at YWCA of Seattle | King | Snohomish are exposed to clients who have experienced or are experiencing trauma in various forms including but not limited to: domestic violence, sexual violence, homelessness, unemployment, financial hardship, etc.  As a result, staff are at risk of secondary trauma. Employees are encouraged to seek external support and maintain self-care when working indirectly or directly with clients

Hours, Rate & Benefits:
• Hourly rate: $23/hour or DOE
• Regular Full-Time; Hours per week: 40
• FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

• At the time of hire, employees may choose to voluntarily enroll in the Fidelity 403b Plan. Typically after two years of employment, employees are eligible to participate in the YWCA Retirement Fund.
