The YWCA of Seattle-King County’ Domestic Violence Specialized services provides advocacy to adult survivors through providing outreach and direct services. The overall goal is to address the needs of survivors of domestic violence throughout Seattle and South King County. The Domestic Violence Community Advocate provides outreach, direct services and facilitates support groups to assist survivors in safety planning and life skills development, employment and housing. The DV Community Advocate uses a model of trauma informed care with a strength based approach to provide culturally relevant services. 

This position has a social justice component that requires critical thinking through the lens of racism and intersections with poverty. Knowing the core principals of antiracism and grounding those principles in everyday work are required job skills and core values.   • Actively engages in agency-wide Race and Social Justice Initiative (RSJI), and strives for racially equitable outcomes; takes responsibility for creating and maintaining a safe and welcoming community by making room for people of color, trans and gender-non-conforming folks, and other populations who routinely encounter systemic oppressions
  • Facilitate domestic violence support group 
  • Advocates for victims of domestic violence and their children on a case by case basis, providing crisis intervention, assessment and ongoing case management
  • Works in the DSHS offices (South King County Kent, Auburn and Federal Way) providing advocacy based DV counseling/Family Violence Service Plans for TANF clients
  • Interfaces with legal advocates to guide victims through criminal justice system, and develops ongoing referral relationships with health, legal and social service system
  • Provides education on domestic violence to survivors, community groups, agencies and marginalized populations in Seattle and South king county
  • Maintains accurate client files and conducts timely data collection and contract reporting
  • Conducts community presentations/outreach
  • Provides culturally appropriate domestic violence services to African American/Hispanic women
  • Works in coordination with the YWCA’s Central area regional staff
  • Attend staff team meeting
  • Adhere to all Volunteer Services protocol relative to volunteer usage, recognition and monitoring
  • Attend required safety trainings and meetings; follow all safety and health guidelines, standards, practices, policies and procedures; and actively participate in the agency’s Emergency Preparedness program and activities

Qualifications & Core Competencies:
  • Experience working with communities of color and people from different cultures than your own
  • Demonstrated understanding of the intersection of racism and poverty
  • Demonstrated commitment to antiracist principles
  • Must have completed a minimum of 20 to 30 hours of initial basic training that covers: advocacy based counseling; history of domestic violence; legal, medical, and social services; system advocacy; confidentiality and ethics; client safety assessments; planning, problem solving, and crisis intervention; providing services and advocacy to individuals from diverse communities
  • Strong orientation toward advocacy, with ability to navigate multiple systems (i.e. human services, health, criminal justice) 
  • At least one year of direct social service experience or BA degree in human services or related field; or a combination of translatable skills and experience in a related field
  • Experience working with culturally diverse populations, primarily women who speak Spanish
  • Knowledge of community resources in South King County (Renton, Auburn, Kent, Federal Way area)
  • Have confidence to handle complicated situations
  • Familiarity with how the interplay of cultural issues (e.g., racism, gender) may influence how some women of color (esp. African Americans/Hispanic) are affected by and respond to situations of domestic violence
  • Must attend continued education training on advocacy based DV counseling for victims and their children
  • Candidate must be able to travel independently between multiple work sites within a day
  • Proficiency in another language is a plus
  • Core competencies expected: discernment/judgment, initiative, collaboration, organizational understanding, communication: oral and written, fostering diversity, and race & social justice advocacy

  • All positions at YWCA of Seattle | King | Snohomish are exposed to clients who have experienced or are experiencing trauma in various forms including but not limited to: domestic violence, sexual violence, homelessness, unemployment, financial hardship, etc.As a result, staff are at risk of secondary trauma. Employees are encouraged to seek external support and maintain self-care when working indirectly or directly with clients
  • Continuously sits for extended periods while performing desktop activities

  • Repetitively uses hands and wrists, fingering, handling, grasping, and reaching in using telephones, computers, kitchen equipment, donations and supplies

  • Frequently stands, walks, sits and climbs in performing duties in the office and in traveling to off-site meetings
  • Occasionally lifts and carries up to 5lbs. of paperwork, files and training materials, occasionally up to 50 lbs.

Hours, Rate & Benefits:
• Hourly rate: $17.99
• Full-time, 40 hours per week
• FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt
• Excellent benefits package including medical insurance, retirement plan, plus generous vacation, holiday and sick leave plans
• At the time of hire, employees may choose to voluntarily enroll in the Fidelity 403b Plan. Typically after two years of employment, employees are eligible to participate in the YWCA Retirement Fund.
