Summary:

The YWCA is on a mission to eliminate racism and empower women. To this end, the YWCA’s Children & Youth Division provide a continuum of services to uplift young people of color and to eliminate the opportunity gap. The Children & Youth Division cultivate leadership skills, academic success, and strong racial identity development among our youth by providing engaging and culturally-relevant services and by building strong networks of support.

The Family Village Issaquah (FVI) Child & Youth Advocate develops and implements direct services that promote positive outcomes for young people living in our affordable housing community. These services include daily (Mon – Fri) elementary and middle school after-school programs, day camps during school breaks, a weekly Kaleidoscope Play & Learn group for children (ages 0-5) and their caregivers, and resource referrals. This position requires collaboration with a broad base of internal and external stakeholders, including families, YWCA staff, volunteers, schools, community organizations, and fellow social service providers.

This position has a social justice component that requires critical thinking through the lens of racism and intersections with poverty. Knowing the core principals of anti-racism and grounding those principles in everyday work are required job skills and core values. Responsibilities:

    Programming

    • Develop, implement, and evaluate culturally-relevant children and youth programming that promotes social-emotional learning and academic success—including daily after-school programs for elementary and middle school students, a weekly Kaleidoscope Play & Learn group for children (ages 0-5) and their caregivers, and school-age day camps during school breaks
    • Create daily time within after-school programming for homework help, reading, and academic skill building. Tutor students and provide academic support
    • Develop an engaging curriculum that centers African American/Black students and cultivates a strong community, encourages young people to explore their emotions and their passions, and promotes positive identity-development and cultural-pride
    • Promote an emotionally safe community for children and youth to be their authentic selves, learn, and grow
    • Encourage youth and resident leadership by involving them in planning processes
    • Communicate with children and youth in a way that makes them feel valued and heard
    • Recruit, interview, train, and supervise a team of community volunteers to support youth programming
    • Provide oversight, coordination, and direct support to YWCA staff, volunteers, and service learners in the provision of services
    • Ensure appropriate supervision of children and youth; maintain and reinforce safety and health standards
    • Maintain strict confidentiality and security in regard to all YWCA client information
    • Collaborate with FVI housing staff to develop and host monthly community-wide events
    • Serve children, youth, and their families in a professional and culturally-relevant manner at all times
    • Incorporate approaches to fully include children and youth from multiracial, multi-ethnic, multilingual, and varied socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as children and youth with special needs
    • Use materials that demonstrate acceptance of and affirm all races, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, cultures, families, languages, and physical and developmental abilities
    • Maintain accurate records including registration packets, sign-in sheets, case notes, resource referrals, program and volunteer hours, and other documents as assigned
    • Actively participate in the Youth Program Quality Assessment. Host site reviews and help conduct assessments of other YWCA youth sites. Establish and proactively work toward site-based improvement goals to boost youth program quality.
    • Submit reports and program evaluations on time

    Partnerships

    • Establish rapport and proactively cultivate authentic partnerships with children, youth, and families to provide relevant programming, services, and referrals
    • Hold regular office hours to meet with parents, support them in their goals, and provide culturally-relevant resource referrals
    • Submit and pick-up weekly Eastside Baby Corner orders
    • Act as a liaison and advocate between children/youth/families and schools. Regularly visit schools to support students and to build relationships and communicate with school staff
    • Develop and maintain relationships with community partners—collaborate closely with external stakeholders to support children, youth, and families
    • Participate in both YWCA and community coalition meetings (i.e. Issaquah Schools Foundation Basic Student Needs Committee, Nourishing Network, Issaquah School District Equity Committee, School’s Out Washington’s Housing & Expanded Learning Network, etc.), as well as various program-related activities as requested
    • Create flyers, posters, newsletter articles, and other communications to inform residents and the public of children and youth activities, community resources, and events at FVI. Actively promote FVI’s Kaleidoscope Play & Learn group in the greater Issaquah community
    • Actively engages in agency-wide Race & Social Justice Initiative (RSJI) and strives for racially equitable outcomes; takes responsibility for creating and maintaining a safe and welcoming community by making room for people of color, trans, and gender-non-conforming folks and other populations who routinely encounter systemic oppressions
    • Adhere to all Volunteer Services protocol relative to volunteer usage, recognition, and monitoring
    • Attend required safety trainings and meetings; follow all safety and health guidelines, standards, practices, policies, and procedures; and actively participate in the agency’s Emergency Preparedness program and activities

Qualifications & Core Competencies:
    • Bachelor’s degree, or commensurable experience
    • Two or more years of experience working with children and youth in group settings. Experience with YPQA highly preferred
    • One or more years of experience with program development and facilitation
    • Experience working with communities of color and people from different cultures than your own
    • Demonstrated commitment to anti-racist principles
    • Demonstrated understanding of the intersection of racism and poverty, and a commitment to racial equity
    • Experience working with children and families from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. Experience working with children who have experienced homelessness preferred
    • Ability and willingness to work independently and as part of a team and to make sound judgments without on-site supervision.
    • Must be able to travel to multiple worksites withing a day
    • Attention to detail and strong organizational and record keeping skills
    • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, to implement program components.
    • Demonstrated knowledge and skills of basic computer competencies such as emailing, calendaring, entry-level data entry and familiarity with Microsoft Office products
    • Core competencies expected: race and social justice advocacy, fostering diversity, collaboration, discernment/judgment, relationship building, communication, planning and organizing, problem solving, flexibility

Hours, Rate & Benefits:
• Hourly rate: $17.99
• Hours per week: 40
• Pay grade: 16
• FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt
• Excellent benefits package including medical insurance, retirement plan, plus generous vacation, holiday and sick leave plans
• At the time of hire, employees may choose to voluntarily enroll in the Fidelity 403b Plan. Typically after two years of employment, employees are eligible to participate in the YWCA Retirement Fund.
