Early Childhood Education - Classroom Aide

Summary:

Our mission is to eliminate racism and empower women. To this end, our goal within Children & Youth Services is to uplift young people's voices and eliminate the opportunity gap. The YWCA Early Learning Center provides Head Start and Early Head Start classrooms (ages 1-5) to provide affordable, high-quality care to children from low-income backgrounds. The Classroom Aide works cooperatively with all teachers in toddler and preschool classrooms to implement planned curriculum and to provide a nurturing environment and sound classroom management according to licensing standards and YWCA policy.

This position has a social justice component that requires critical thinking through the lens of racism and intersections with poverty. Knowing the core principals of anti-racism and grounding those principles in everyday work are required job skills and core values. Responsibilities:
  • Implements curriculum under the direction of Lead Teachers
  • Implements lesson plans for individuals and assigned groups with instructions from Lead Teachers
  • Assesses group and individual needs in coordination with Lead Teachers
  • Develops goals and objectives in coordination with Lead Teachers
  • Moves between classrooms to support all teachers and give breaks and plan time
  • Maintains room, supplies, and equipment in coordination with Lead Teachers
  • Participates in training and remains knowledgeable about current research and practices in Early Childhood Education
  • Develops positive relationships with children, parents, co-workers, and volunteers
  • Communicates any problems or concerns regarding the program or children to Lead Teachers and/or Center Director
  • Provides care to toddlers (e.g. diapering, toilet training, active supervision, etc.) and children for the purpose of ensuring a safe and healthy environment for children
  • Maintains necessary and accurate records
  • Maintains health and safety standards according to licensing requirements
  • Show demonstrated ability to interact with people of different cultures
  • Attends a variety of educational workshops, seminars, in-service trainings, etc. for the purpose of maintaining their professional knowledge
  • Models conversation, manners, cleanup activities, listening, and everyday interactions for the purpose of demonstrating appropriate social behavior in a culturally-sensitive manner
  • Responsible for providing direct and active supervision of the children in care in a variety of educational settings (e.g. classroom, playground, field trips, nap times, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment; follows child safety standards of conduct
  • Attends monthly, after-hours staff meetings
  • Actively engages in the agency-wide Race and Social Justice Initiative (RSJI), and strives for racially equitable outcomes; takes responsibility for creating and maintaining a safe and welcoming community by making room for people of color, trans and gender-non-conforming folks, and other populations who routinely encounter systemic oppressions
  • Adheres to all Volunteer Services protocol relative to volunteer usage, recognition and monitoring
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications & Core Competencies:

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience working with children
  • Demonstrated understanding of the intersection of racism and poverty
  • Experience working with communities of color and people from different cultures than your own
  • Demonstrated commitment to anti-racist principles
  • Proof of physical exam and negative TB test must be on file before start date
  • First Aid/CPR card within 90 days
  • Food Handler’s Permit within 90 days
  • Requires some scheduling flexibility for training, staffing, and parent events

Preferred:
  • 12+ months experience with children 0-5
  • Experience working with communities of color
  • Experience working with children with disabilities and high behavioral needs
  • Experience working with families experiencing homelessness
  • Any of the following:
    • Washington State Early Childhood Education (ECE) Initial Certificate
    • Child Development Associate (CDA)
    • AA in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Child Development, Special Education, Human Development, Child & Family Studies

  • Continuously works indoors with the children
  • Frequently stands, walks, sits, and climbs in performing duties and in traveling to off-site meetings
  • Frequently reaches and grasps in using telephones, computers, and in general operations
  • Frequently lifts and carries up to 50 lbs.

Continuously over 80% of the time, Frequently 20-80% of the time, and Occasionally under 20% of the time.


Hours, Rate & Benefits:
• Hourly rate: $15-$15.50
• Hours per week: 20-25
• FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt

• At the time of hire, employees may choose to voluntarily enroll in the Fidelity 403b Plan. Typically after two years of employment, employees are eligible to participate in the YWCA Retirement Fund.
